My gut feeling was that a higher than usual cube efficiency is required for a take, and that the actual efficiency is lower than usual.

I think I answered the first part. :) But regarding the second, why do you think the actual efficiency is lower than typical? Is it because the game will often be very near the end when a recube is applied?
