In Response To: Practice minimizing wastage (AP)

A couple of years ago I wrote a program to find the positions with the lowest EPC at any given pip count. I termed those positions ideal. For any number of checkers on the board at or below the 11pt, and for any given pip count, there is usually only one ideal position. As I recall, with 15 checkers, there is only one pip count at which it is ideal to have even one checker on the 7pt. At all other other pip counts, it is better to have the 7pt bare.

An interesting variation on your game is one I sometimes play. Grab one of the ideal positions from my tables, and use it for your starting position. It is how I refined my own bear in and bear off technique.

You can download my tables at Backgammon Galore!
