OK let me clarify my questions:

In general, will creation of database affect checker play or is the only effect that XG will simply display EPC out to the 13 point?

If it does in fact affect checker play: is there a way to make XG always choose the play that results in lowest EPC?

And regarding the statement that minimizing EPC is not always optimal: In regular backgammon I believe this is true (though probably unusual). But in this variation where both players use same roll, it seems that minimizing EPC would always be optimal strategy...but correct me if Im wrong.
