Note that 5/3 2/1*(2) also pays now and gives White only 11 rolls to hit, but doesn't fare as well in the rollout as 5/4(2) 2/1*(2). Not sure why; maybe the cleanup is harder.

Others mentioned that the more crunched you get the less likely that another checker gets sent back (in the future). Assuming you play 2/1* with one of your aces, 5/4(3) is best, 5/4(2) is second best, and 5/4(1) further down the list.
