Baffle Box Update

Many years ago, in Los Angeles, using an "inferior" baffle box that did not have the ridges and the plate that ensured that the dice will hit all the baffles, a man proved that he could set the dice with his hands and affect the outcome of the rolls. Of course, instead of "dropping" the dice into the box, he set them and placed them carefully. Since them, people have been paranoid about using a baffle box without cups...just because once a cheater was able to beat the box.
I don't care if someone uses a cup or not so long as the drop the dice into the box, but many people are overly concerned and suspicious. At the same time, many people are simply used to rolling with cups and like the idea of shaking the dice and are not comfortable using their hands.
There are no firm, established rules relative to the use of cups or not, and I often play with people who prefer not to use the cups, and that's fine with me. By the way, the box is not about preventing cheaters. I am sure a really good cheater can find a way to cheat no matter what you do. It's all about feeling comfortable that there is a random roll and not worrying about people who might forget to shake; it's about not having dice thrown all over the table and floor; it's about not having cocked dice very often. And it's about aesthetics...it's simply pleasant to watch the dice go in the top and come gently tumbling out the bottom and seeing the process, knowing that the dice are getting tossed and tumbled quite a bit along the way. It bring me peace. It stops me from watching an opponent who never shakes after he gets a good roll, or shakes forever after a bad one. And yes, for some, it does make you feel a little bit safer from being cheated if you are playing with someone you don't know.
