But I don't think backgammon is "better than ever," and would be curious to see how many do think it is? I think the ambiance has changed, casual players are driven away, and I think even serious players sense that something has gone out of the game. Those who don't, I believe, weren't around to know the earlier game.

May be true, Jake, but the only ones (including me, BTW) who were around then and around now are no longer the same persons. Is a (relatively) young person such as MCG, Adam Versaw, Frank Raposa, Ben Friesen, or Vadim Nuniyats as excited by the game as a young person (you or I) was in the late 70's? I think that is the more relevant question and also harder to measure. 'Different' is easy to measure; 'better/worse' is not.
