I stand corrected. I tried it and timed it. My point was even if it does take 2 seconds to ensure a fair roll (and by the sound to ensure the opponent that there are, in fact, two die in the cup instead of one palmed in the hand), it's well worth it.

When we wrote the rule stating that the dice should be shaken 3 times and dropped 4 in. from the table with the cup no touching the table, there were some who laughed at us for being so specific. My response was, how would you write the rule? And they all said something that left the standards for rolling completely ambiguous. And if left ambiguous, then you have no right to call your opponent on it if he only lightly shakes the dice, or if he drops them gently on the board from a low height, or lays the cup on the table when he rolls and prevents the dice from traveling very far after they hit. Without standards, clear and set, there are disagreements and arguments and bad feelings. The idea is to keep the game friendly and fair, and those who say "If it ain't broke..." are ignoring the fact that it maybe if it isn't totally broke and most of the time we do okay with the existing rules, it can be greatly improved. Good enough is the enemy of better.
