Yes, a few very bright people like Stick and MCG were pretty much able to achieve greatness by reading and studying and practicing on their own, but they are the exceptions, as most do far better, far quicker, with a mentor or coach.

Last year i had the chance to talk with one of the really top 2 or 3 bg players in the world (if not the best). I asked him if he knows any top bg player that became top by taking lessons. He answered back with no hesitation: NO
