In Response To: Small tournament without Crawford - Advice needed (neilkaz)

Interesting you mention the cube. A few months back I co-founded the Calgary "Social" (yes we use that term) Backgammon Club. We are slowly growing but it became very obvious that there are a lot of people who are new to the game, or have been playing the game a long time but don't know all the rules.

Some people know how to use the cube, most don't. So for now we just play 1ptrs. No Crawford, No Jacoby. For those of us who use the cube we pretty much play unlimited money games, no Jacoby, automatic doubles. But as people become more regular we have been introducing them to other aspects of the game (including etiquette etc).

Some are slowly getting a basic understanding of the cube. Next we'll start playing matches of shorter lengths. First without Crawford and eventually with (I hope). I have come to realize that what I consider basic and simple rules can be complex for some. So to keep the "social" aspect many of us cater towards the very basic rules for now.

When I saw this thread I felt that the people running this type of tournament probably have similar experiences with their players as I have seen with mine.

If I was running a competitive (bring your own plastic sheet to collect the blood) club things would be different.
