Backgammon by the Bay is the SF Bay Area club run by Ted Chee. It holds two tournaments monthly with three divisions in each. In addition to Ted himself, some of the strong players who frequently participate are Kit Woolsey, Jeremy Bagai, David Levy, Ken Bame, and others to whom I apologize for omitting their names.
DIVISION ENTRY FORMAT RETURN Open $80 Single elimination with consolation 90% Intermediate $40 Single elimination with consolation 85% Beginner $20 Round robin 80%
Non-members add $5.
BGBB membership is $20 per year.
There is a side pool in the Open and perhaps in the Intermediate, but I forget the details. Ted allows entrants in the Open and Intermediate divisions to pay only half. When such a person wins, his winning are cut in half, with the balance divided among other winners. As often as not, there are not enough beginners to hold a separate tournament, so they are merged into the Intermediate division, but only pay a $20 fee. Their winnings are commensurate.
