Weekly tournament entry fee amount

I am not seeing how it works. Can you show for a couple examples?

1) 16 players with winner (1/2), 2nd place (1/4) and 3rd place (1/4)

Players 1 - 16 paid 1$, 2$, ...., 16$ for a total of $136

a) Player 1 wins player 2 2nd, player 3 third.

b) Player 16 first, player 2 2nd, player 3 third.
