Phil: Also, when you remove the money you make the game a better venue for school kids and their families to play....like chess and bridge...and that will help the game grow.
I came from bridge originally, and I was surprised at the prevalence and dominance of money play in backgammon. However, over the years, I have grown to appreciate it. While playing bridge entirely for masters points, or small trophies, the prestige etc, was a really positive experience, which I enjoyed very much. It was not however attracting people to play!
Playing backgammon for money - whether its chouette, heads up, tournament entry fees or anything, it adds a certain commitment that doesnt exist in other games. It adds a value that wouldnt exist otherwise. Take away money in BG, and suddenly the chouette has just closed.
Also, we live in a capitalist country. Money is king, is it not? Putting ones money where your mouth is, well thats considered a commitment, isnt it? And being committed, thats what we are.
