Regarding backgames, XG seems to be just fine with "normal" backgames (4 checkers back). It's probably still generally reliable with up to 6 checkers back. With too many checkers back, though, its "wheels come off" as Kit Woolsey put it, just like the other bots.

Just the other day I decided to look at what happens if you give XG the task of rolling a six-prime home. From Kit's Encyclopedia we learn that Snowie seems to be more-or-less O.K. with a six-prime from the 5pt through the 10pt, but that the wheels come off if you shift it back a pip to the 6pt through the 11pt. I checked XG and its wheels come off at the same point, more or less. Obviously, this weakness will translate into weaknesses in superbackgames with nearly all the checkers back.

By the way, GNU 1.0 is also very strong, comparable to XG. It's free, of course, and it has a few features that XG does not (the most important of which, for me at least, are extra statistics in cube decision rollouts). However, XG is much faster at doing rollouts, and many people find XG more user-friendly.
