Yes, there is a chance that someone will "take a shot" by rolling, getting a bad roll, and suddenly noticing that there was an illegal move ...
Even if both players are completely honest, allowing a move to be corrected after the opponent has rolled can give an advantage to one of the players.
Suppose Player A rolls the dice and makes an (innocent) illegal play. B doesn't notice, rolls the dice, and gets a roll that hits A's (wrongly placed) blot. Player A is confused. "Hey, I thought that blot was safe. Wait a minute, shouldn't the blot on p10 be on p9?"
In this situation, the only reason Player A noticed the illegal play is that B rolled a hitting number. Player A ends up systematically benefiting from his error.
One place I do think you should allow (require) a delayed correction is with a "grossly illegal" play (for lack of a better term). This is something such as placing the wrong color checker on the bar, taking a checker off the board instead of putting it on the bar, etc.
