The interception rate, 5%, seems high. Roethlisberger put that ball somewhere where almost nobody could catch it. His lifetime interception percentage is about half of what you estimated.

Your first paragraph can be condensed to "it didn't run 40 more seconds off the clock". Everything else that was mentioned remained the same.

I'm defending the call to play devil's advocate more than anything else. I doubt anybody really thought on a second down they'd go deep. Hoping to catch the D sleeping and perhaps boost a rookie's confidence? The guy they threw to had never played the 4th quarter in the NFL. It's a safe time to try to get him a big play. The downside is so minute I'm not even sure it is a downside.

As it played out Houston was still miles and miles from capitalizing on that 40 seconds. Just because half of the equation got there doesn't mean they were close to punishing them for that play. If they get the TD instead of the field goal the game is gin. That has to be worth something too.
