Thanks for the explanation at rgb. The rollouts posted there show that stacking up the 6pt with 14/6 is best in the first position, while making the 3pt is best in the second.

For the same reasons as you, I had the plays exactly reversed. In the first position, your opponent will usually be forced to break midpoint his when he hits. Therefore the risk of leaving a blot on the 14pt in a game where the race is tied is mitigated somewhat. The rollout says no. In the second position, you are ahead in the race. Protecting that lead would seem to call for safe play. Once again, the rollout disagrees.
