At dmp it's a rarity that you would ever pick up or try to pick up a second checker assuming you can easily close the opponent out so in the first problem 8/2 is called for.

In your (cough) 'slight' variation it's gammon go so we try to pick up a second checker with 16, 1. You didn't need to go so extreme, even at a normal match score I play to get a second checker. There is little risk involved and a noticeable gammon spike it's just that at dmp there's obviously no need to take that little risk.
