well done, and side pool was fun, and other stuff

In Response To: Congrats Taki! Excellent tournament, well done Bill Davis, Amy Trudeau and team (Keene)

I guess if you run tournaments for 40 years you learn how to do things right. Lots of fun and many fun side events. The most exciting thing for me was to see Michelle win the Battle of The Sexes. She has worked hard on her game for a long time, works hard for the USBGF and the players streaming and transcribing, and is a happy face and brings joy to every event. I think her opponent, Coolrey, might have had only one person rooting for him in the finals against Michelle, and I wonder what he had to do to get her to root for him?

My $100 non-Giant side pool attracted 13 entrants, and Gerry Tansey won the entire pool. Gerry was in my calcutta (with Julius) so I made sure to buy the team (in partners with MFIC)...we were the best team and went for the most money. Some people thought I was buying myself, but the truth is I believe Gerry might have the best W/L record in the history of ABT...he doesn't play much but he sure seems to win most of the time. And Julius is no slouch.

I also won Liar's Dice, proving one of my best talents.

There were 12 in the Novice (Limited) but it was really cute to see that when Kevin Torrens won, he told me he needed a couple of minutes to compose himself before I could take his picture with the trophy...he was so excited and happy and proud he couldn't stop shaking! That's what it's all about. And when I asked the second-place winner, Melvin Smith, to get into the picture as well, he was thankful and asked if I would send him a copy so he could show it to all his friends. (Like I've got time for that crap?)

Carter ruined the weekend for me, as he often does. In preparation for my prop-match with Mochy, I played Carter 15 games where I started with the cube on my side, but because Carter is slightly worse than Mochy, I paid him a half point for the cube. He slaughtered me. I think I won 5 games out of the 15. I won money in two side events and the calcutta and a heads up game, and Carter took it all (but I did win the flip for dinner, which helped).

Today, Carter and I are going to teach Tuvya and Akiko how to get butchered in the Chicago chouette, but first we will take them to lunch at Joe's to soften their brains. Then it's back to my place where, glutton for punishment that I am, I am offering to be perma-box against them provided I start with the cube and they can consult. (I won't be offering a half-point since Carter will have help from two superior players.)

Akiko beat Presser in the semis of Consolation, and I have a $100 bet with her that David outplayed her (PR). (We should have the results today or tomorrow. I was also willing to bet her that Neil would outplay her in the finals, but she didn't like the odds I wanted on that bet.)
