All players struggle with confidence at times. I saw an interview this week, on TSN, with Mark Messier who projects supreme confidence. He spoke of his struggles with confidence, and claims that all players endure these struggles from time to time.

During the NY/Tampa Bay series, Henrik Lundquist spoke of losing his confidence early in the series. So it happens to the best of professionals. That does not mean that the coach did delay in pulling the goalie to protect the goalie's confidence, but i did suggest that it might have been a factor in the coaches decision, and possibly it was. Kelly Hrudy, a former goalie and now a commentator on TSN has spoken of this issue before.

On the issue of 'elevated risk of firing'.... perhaps it is best to ask professional coaches or GMs why optimal strategies are not followed.
