Tradition of odd length bg matches

Whether or not we think that organisers should have the option to fine tune the average length of a round by, for example, playing to 4 points rather than 3 or 5, the variance that exists in the length of all bg matches is a totally separate issue. However matches are constructed, variance is inescapable, but could it be that it would be reduced if matches were a fixed number of games?

It might not be a bad rule to force an immediate double-take at 2a 2a, but I guess we should just continue to let things play out.

Thanks for the link, Tom, but that wasn't the table. Someone posted a table, from a simulation, with the mean number of games to complete the match, from all scores up to about 11a.
