I played online for $ for a brief time in 2004. I quickly got a sense that things were not on the level (unusual styles of play and consistently crushing results), and what was worse, I wound up inadvertently playing the same dubious players over and over again under multiple log-in names (they would gloat in the same manner when I quit playing them).

It just seemed too obviously worthwhile for people to come up with ways of cheating with the help of 'bots.
