I don't know why you wouldn't just post the stories instead of making people email you to get them.
If Phil's post is true, that he had permission from the director beforehand then almost your entire post is nothing but the advancement of early onset carpal tunnel syndrome.
It usually pretty sketch to refuse to shake hands. Unless you post the story I'll continue thinking it wasn't one of the rarest situations where I'd think it was okay.
I agree with you about baffle boxes and dice tubes not being mandatory and I'm happy not to play with them personally. I get the appeal of them and understand why many would like them (BB much more so than DT) but I don't generally have that need. I don't like all the crap on the table either but that's not the excuse I'd pick ('I can't find the cube!') in refusing them. I enjoy the game more without than with. That's enough under current rules.
I think that more players prefer legal moves because they believe it affords them some sort of insurance against themselves. We have all lost matches where we missed a play, haven't we???
Absolutely not. This is ridiculous to even suggest. Most of the top level players prefer legal moves and it is clearly to our detriment to play legal moves. Who is going to make more illegal moves, Mr. Stick who is young (for backgammon), doesn't really tire, and is a decent player so it is easier for him to realize something is not right or random opponent? It clearly costs me equity overall to play legal moves.
Some tournaments have adopted legal moves, but most haven't
This may be true, it may not. If you would have restricted it to ABT tournaments then it's certainly true. All of Chiva's tournaments are legal moves though. Steen's tournaments are legal moves. I believe it is only still that way because TDs had often already released the rules and printed off the fliers. They also don't want to rock the boat but as sure as I was about clocks becoming the norm for the main event(s), I am sure legal moves will also do the same. It is taking us forever to get rid of the old ABT rules which were insufficient. Eventually backgammon will get rid of ABT points. That's still way in the future but it will happen. The ideas are there, the implementation is slow.
