Steve's solution may be right. Here is a simpler one (I think).

This week's contestants have equity $250k/6 = $41,667. Next week's contestants have $250k/5 = $50k. So the value of advancing is $8333. Even if guaranteed a spot next week you should pay at most $8333. And the -1 lb is far from a guarantee of advancing.

BTW, of the four or five contestants and trainers they consulted, ALL said it was better to turn down the $ and accept the -1 lb.

Anyone see a problem with my solution? My brain hasn't been firing on all eight cylinders this weekend (as Stick can confirm :(.
