Play like a Turk

What I am saying is that it appears that players with a deep understanding of cubeless play (tavla) have risen to the top of open play in this tournament.

These complex backgame positions are only recently played moderately well by extremegammon and terribly by all bots preceding them.

If you are spending a significant amount of training time with the bots you are unlikely to get much practice in complex backgames or plays that are not emphasized by cubeless styles of play or the "opening book".

It is very difficult to have an advantage in open play with many players having error rate that are -2 according to ExtremeGammon. Recognizing that the bots have styles and opponents have preferences may be the last opportunity for gaining significant advantage over ones opponents in this game.

Studying an opponent's "style" and countering it may only be a small advantage but it may be the only significant improvement over playing at -2 left to open players unless there are further advances in game theory.

As anyone who has played me can attest my error rate is no where near -2 (so I should have lots of room for easy improvement) but I have noticed in analysis it is the small differences between correct plays that set the theme and outcome of the game and that are interesting.

Blunders and errors are obvious as events (and I wish I could remove them) but the most interesting questions are found in the differences between almost equally correct play and it's impact on the structure of the game.
