Equity Bets

Yes -- we do full 1296 rollouts to settle the Equity Bets. I was a little lazy getting this post written and just settled for the ++ rollouts for the purposes of illustration. Obviously, both parties have to agree on what standard of rollout settles the bet.

I'm not suggesting there aren't other good ways to place bets -- only that this is a way of betting we've found interesting and worthwhile. Everyone has their own economy and style of play / wagering. For me, I like to keep my Equity Bets separate from the scoresheet, as I track my wins/losses in a database that I don't want to clutter with side bets -- and its interesting to see how I do on these positional bets against various players. I hate when people slow down a chouette getting all involved in a side bet to be settled on the spot on a tablet -- instead we just agree to a bet, take a picture of the position (I throw my money clip join the board as a marker), and settle it later.

In a scenario like ours where I see my regular opponents on a weekly basis it's easy to settle these odd-priced side wagers on our next meeting -- with a little trash-talking fun added in.

As for higher $/.01 bets, it can lead to some playful cat-and-mouse -- offer, perhaps hesitantly, the usual $1 bet, and once accepted, especially with eagerness on the other side, suggest you'd be willing to go $3 on it, bitch! Of course if you have all cold-blooded tacticians in your game, you may never get a bet at all. But in my experience, the momentum of a long session can lead to some interesting opportunities where hubris can take a lively hand.

And no, of course this isn't the same as playing out a prop. I still like the idea of contracting a 36-game prop occasionally -- but its a pretty big commitment of time, and might break up a chouette. But on a simple positional bet it seems natural to me that you should win more $ for being hugely right than for being marginally right.
