I agree. If you don't give sugar to the bees in winter, you won't have honey. So the hoteliers put some sugar (added money) and they get visitors.

Turkish success in backgammon has many faces. Turkish world champions are champions of a backgammon loving nation.

Also world backgammon has many faces. Phil dreams of federation and he is not alone. But federation of national federations resembles world empires - there is little democracy, but they are efficient. I guess world Association of backgammon associations (not necessarily single supreme and official in their countries) would better serve the purpose and it could easily emerge at a tournament organized by the US, Japan, Danish, French, British, German etc. federations/associations and open for joining of similar entities.
