This a mutual holding game. The race is close. Under these circumstances, getting hit carries a big price.

My general approach is simple. Both sides will opt not to volunteer when a credible alternative exists. Meanwhile, both sides will build the strongest inner board possible. If nothing catastrophic happens earlier, both sides may choose to switch off the 6pt in order to leave a checker outside, and preserve a safe way to play a 6.

Slotting the 3pt is a very constructive play. It is part of building the strongest board possible.
