Chouette - A few history notes

Sorry, Rick, I've never heard "jouette".
Jouer means play (verb), jouet is a toy (substantive; don't pronounce the final t) and apparently jouette is a Belgian-French word for playful (pronounce the final t). Of course, jouette is pronounced in a way similar to chouette (two syllable version): zhoo-et vs shoo-et or so.
Maybe it's better to get feedback from players in France as backgammon in Belgium isn't very French: it's played for serious in some of the large Flemish towns and in Brussels where the players are Iranian, Greek and other foreigners (me) as well as FR and NL speaking Belgians.
