Vigilance is always required no matter the honesty of the opponent

There's a huge difference though in playing a sloppy player like Ed who doesn't shake his dice, moves both hands to move the checkers, uses both hands to move the checkers and hit the clock, and makes far more illegal moves than a player like myself. Yes, you should always pay attention to what your opponent does but at the end of the day one would expend far more energy in playing Ed 5 matches of X length than playing myself the same 5 matches. The argument in question is therefore valid.
Some positions you need to pay more attention than others. The one you bring in to question is a decent example. Where there are many possible options it is more likely that an opponent will shuffle around and potentially screw something up. With most bg plays you might know immediately there's only Play A or Play B and not need to pay much attention. Often I've turned away from the board and turned back only to see a position that I know isn't right. I'm able to recreate the original or, on rare occasions when it has been needed, simply recreate the entire game to show the opponent how we got there. I realize not everyone can do this but it's an option for some.
