Actually I was mistaken when I said the following:
Since (I believe) this is typically a courtesy (to CJC) from the ABT event director, there's no actual $ available if someone decides to turn down the free entry.
Turns out the Flint BG Club actually provides the entry fee WITHOUT help from the ABT director(s). So this even more so justifies any rake of entry fees. (Now that I think about it, if ABT directors were giving freebees to the Flint Club they would be m/l obliged to provide similar perks to other US clubs, and pretty soon they couldn't break even for their weekend ABT events, either.)
I'm pretty sure, though, that if a player wins the "third thursday" tourney but turns down the entry fee, s/he is not given extra prize money. If you're ever near Flint on any Thursday, I recommend you stop by and play. It's a vibrant club with good attendance. And if it happens to be a "third thursday" expect quite a good turnout. Last time I was there (which was probably 2002) for that special event I believe the field was 31 players. Now THAT's a good sized field!
