I think you have a strong point about the cube action situation because the clear indicator of end of turn is the physical movement of the cube, or some statement like "double" or similar. The hitting of the clock, although technically required for completion, doesn't change the decision already made. Moreover, there is no possibility of a sequence of repeated clock activation errors, which is the main issue I believe.

I think the inclusion of such a clause is beneficial in rules based on the principle of "legal moves" but some further refinement to the current version of this rule is desirable.
