lynch law in Chicago?

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective, Michel. Your point of view is reasonable, but I'm certain that Rory made his decision according to his best judgement in accordance with the spirit of legal moves and I doubt there was anything fishy in the sense of any sort of favoritism or lynch mentality or anything like that.
I will say that I recall in the Nordic this year when Ed O'Laughlin was involved in a controversy in the Championship Quarterfinals that the Ruling Committee was nowhere in sight, they had all retired for the night, and it must have taken a good 45 minutes to resolve, so I don't think these types of glitches are unique to U.S. tournaments.
I think Phil would offer to pay for your Chicago Open fee not because he thought something fishy happened but because he is a super nice generous guy, who, being somewhat of an ambassador for the game here in the US and worldwide, saw how upset a visitor to our country was and was trying to find a way to encourage you to stay for the rest of the tournament.
I hear lots of great things about Rory's tournaments so I hope you will not give up on U.S. Backgammon in general nor Rory's tournament in particular.
