There's something that rubs me the wrong way about both the $-bidding solution and the "quiz" solution. In the former, people's bank balances play a significant role in who wins the tournament. In the latter, chance is removed from the game, and that's not backgammon -- backgammon is not a quiz. (Except when it is designed to be, as in a Dual-Duel or, well, a Quiz.).
Though it may sound odd, I don't think it's fair to promote a game that offers an alluring combination of luck and skill, inviting people to pay entry fees and vie with players they acknowledge to be stronger than them and then suddenly when they get to the final three, say "sorry, this is now a pure skill event." If you went the other way and said "We will decide this by rolling the dice, and the high roll gets the bye" the stronger players would howl at the unfairness of that. But just so, basing it on a quiz is unfair to the weaker players.
I think whatever your solution is, it should involve actually playing backgammon, and each player should compete on a level field in terms of equity, as in the original proposal ()if I'm recalling what it was accurately).
