While your question is a legitimate one, the question that is more directly relevant to Phil's accusation is not whether a strong player would make this play, but whether a weak player would. I have definitely seen weak players make wild slotting plays out of desperation. Usually, such plays are wrong, but sometimes they get the computer's nod of approval. The play that Phil described here is one that I would not be surprised to see OTB with certain weak opponents.

I myself would be very cautious of accusing someone of cheating on the basis of the evidence presented in this thread. If the accusation is incorrect, then it poisons the game almost as much as cheating itself does.
