This another Hoyle derivative book, with some additional basic rules for variants to the normal backgammon game. At most, it uses slightly less antiquated language than Hoyle employed in 1741, e.g., using the word "opponent" rather than "adversary". There is more grace and elegance in the original version though perhaps less intelligibility.
The first author to make any significant improvement on Hoyle's original work of 1741 was W.L. Richard with his "Complete Backgammon" 190 years later:

W.L. Richard's work was quite outstanding, bearing comparison with the books of the early 1970s. He and Hoyle were the most significant backgammon authors before Cooke, Dwek, Holland, Jacoby and Magriel, in my opinion.
