I will nod in agreement with the others who have already answered. Cover it asap. That is the hard and fast rule. I know a wise young chap who wrote an article on this that was published over at Gammonvillage if you happen to be a member.

Mythbusters No. 5 - Covering the Slotted Ace Point

The times you specifically don't want to cover it would be if you were in a backgame, playing either side, or if there is something stellar you could otherwise do with the roll. The general guideline though is cover the damn thing or it's a thorn in your side the rest of the game at all the wrong times.
