If you think the ABT dead-cube rule is poorly written, try the WBA dead-cube rule

In Response To: Links to previous discussions about redoubling a dead cube (Timothy Chow)

WBA Rules, 4.4.7 DEAD CUBES: A player cannot double beyond the number of points still needed to win a match.

Try reconciling this opaque language when, for example, you're simply holding a 2-cube at 3a/3a and wishing to redouble to 4 for the match.

Anyway, it would seem that any current discussion of the old "ABT rules" as they apply to ABT tournament play is moot, now that the USBGF has absorbed the ABT. As of Jan 1, 2017, the USBGF rulebook is the default controlling authority on the American Backgammon Tour, per its metarule 1.1:

"These tournament rules ... shall apply to all tournaments affiliated with the USBGF ... and no rules other than these rules may be used except as may be expressly promulgated by the Tournament Director in advance."

So, the long and justifiably maligned ABT dead-cube rule 5.6 is gone for good, unless exhumed and "expressly promulgated" by a tournament director before.
