learning from mistakes?

First question when analyzing your own mistake is "did I even consider the best play?" If not, try to figure out why not. If you DID consider the best play but then rejected it, you probably had a reason for doing so (and at the time you felt it was a good reason). Rather than to just throw out your preconceived (in this case erroneous) logic, try and figure out why what you were thinking didn't apply. The best way to do this is to shuffle the checkers around until you find a position where your play was right. Finally, compare that to the original position and see what factors overrode your original concept.
I would suggest playing money games. AND analyze & reply each game right after you finish it. That way not only do you get the quickest feedback (when it's fresh in your mind) but if you are interrupted and don't get back to the problem for a while (hours or even days) at least you won't have lost too much stored info.
If you're going to play matches, make them short matches -- three pointers or five pointers. You get much of the matchplay cube variations with these and you still get the best chance for quick turnaround on your feedback.
