Dorn -- I had the exact same experience when I was shopping for checkers to build my Zavoral board around (I generally choose the checkers first when getting a custom board made). In my case I was pretty confident of the colors I wanted, but was curious about some unusual 'double weight' checkers (or something like that) they were offering. I was hoping to pay for two sets in full if I could return one of the sets for a refund (so they'd not be at any risk) but I got the same kind of response you did. It seemed a little 'penny wise and pend foolish' since it meant I just went with the cheaper set that I knew would be sufficient.
But I guess I can see how if it's a sole proprietor sort of thing how the hassle of sending / receiving a lot of equipment isn't worth the hassle to them. I can say the checkers I bought were promptly delivered and were of very nice quality. I went with the pearled zaza & sacci ones:

One suggestion I might make is that since you travel to a lot of tournaments, you just take your board with you and try out other people's checkers with them -- that can be a 'free' way of shopping -- if your color scheme isn't too offbeat. Even if you don't see the colors you want, you can often figure out whether a particular "texture" is too your liking.
