Backgame technique

I don't think you should beat yourself up about an XG-evaluated .036 error in a position like this one. The more important decisions will come later, as you suggest, when you have to decide when and how to start letting him out of your home.
You won't necessarily want to let him run his spares and keep all his points, so it might be better to break up starting somewhere other than your 10 point later on, after he's crashed. That might make him break the 23 or 22 point instead of running the spare. You also may want to break leaving a blot on the broken point, depending on how chaotic his home is at that moment. You might then pick up more blots for a gammon after he's down to only two defensive points instead of three.
If the bot isn't yelling any louder than this at you, why not just flip it off, try out your game plan for a few games, and see if you can win a greater percentage of games and gammons than it is saying you will?
