In Response To: Why I voted to Accept the proposed USBGF rules - Ruling Guide (Jack Edelson)

Jack Edelson: an Accept vote should be cast only if we think the implementation of these proposed rules is, overall, in the best interests of backgammon, even if we disagree with a few of them.

That is how I do feel, and that is why I voted Yes.

The page with the allowable alternatives covers a lot of the currently most contentious items. It allows for directors who intensely dislike the default provision to do what they've always done, which is permitted as long as they inform the players by a reasonable and not onerous process that is clearly spelled out.

The wiggle room regarding dice on checkers allows for eventual merging of the US rule set with that of other federations, which is good even if we're not going to see that happen soon.

I also agree that the more transparent process this time around was a very good thing, and is more likely to become the precedent if the vote goes Yes on the rules that were produced by it. I see that alone as a reason to vote Yes unless I have some major deal-breaker objection to a provision included in the required portion of them, and I don't.

This rule set isn't perfect, and no rule set will ever be perfect. But this set has to be in the pinch point where prodigious amounts of additional effort will yield very little in the way of improvement. I think these rules are good enough as they stand, and further tweaking before their adoption may lose as much support as it gains.
