I am totally in agreement with your idea.
I am all in favor of having more and more variations and different kinds of games at tournaments. The more the merrier. They make the game more fun and interesting and challenge us in different ways.
The real question is whether these variations should be substituted for the "main event" or not. In some places, like the US, where there is a point race and point standing, I think a lot of people would have problems with the main event being very different (though I would have no problem with it because you can still award points for these special events).
Personally, because I have played in many tournaments and because I love being challenged by variations and new ways of playing, I am very partial to your idea.
I think speed gammon is far more fun than regular gammon, as well as challenging, and I am all for the idea.
The most fun I ever had at a tournament was backgammon-to-lose and now PaskoGammon, but I also like cancel-gammon and many other variations.
So even if we don't have speed gammon and other variations as the main event, I would encourage more tournament directors to offer fun side events.
While we are on the subject, I find having a Masters somewhat redundant with the Open....why not make the Masters something more challenging? Generally these are for top level players who would enjoy PaskoGammon, NackGammon, SpeedGammon, etc.
And, after playing standard backgammon for two days, instead of 5 and 7 point blitzes that are more of the same, this is a good place to introduce variations.
