Mere noise is not a likely explanation for Nack's observation. Variance reduction is supposedly (and provably, if implemented correctly) unbiased. Even if gammon estimates were way off, VR should not introduce a systematical error in a long rollout. Yes, it would introduce noise, but favoring one of the equal plays with 100% confidence should not happen. That said, there might well be a problem with XG's implementation of the VR.
