I understand the benefit of clocks but don't feel that they should be absolutely mandatory. They were not playing that match for us and our enjoyment, but for themselves. Despite that, we watched it and were engaged, despite it being a little slow. With so much on the line, who can blame them for taking their time. Who are you to say how fast backgammon was meant to be played? Clocks are in place to help keep the tournament on time, in the finals no one was waiting for them. They were fine with their pace and so should we be.

There are enough high-level players and those in committees trying to push for their way. News flash, that is not what backgammon needs nor does it help to grow the game. New players are not saying to themselves, boy I would join that game if only I was under more time constraints. Look at your numbers people, catering to the open player has created tournaments that have more open players than lower levels.

Despite all I said above, I am a proponent of clock use, I don't like the idea of making them manditory. Locally we are encouraging their use and getting players more comfortable with them. We even use them in our chouettes. Intermediate players should not have the same time settings as open players as they take more time for routine plays and counting.
