In many countries I think it was 3 to 5 before clock era. Does it change so much two shakes instead of one ? I would be happy anyway with the clear statement of 2 shakes in the EUBGF rules as well, now I personally stay to the one shake in speedgammon. What I think is a slightly changed tournament rules are needed for speedgammon, in chess is quite different for some important issues like illegal moves. To have the delay back in case of cocked dice I think is very important in speed gammon or when short of time (under 2 min but could be 30s also), not so in normal condition.
