A false equivalence, IMO

Nearly all chess matches are won by the more skillful player, whereas ~90% of tournament backgammon matches are decided by dice luck. In a backgammon tournament, a player is overwhelmingly likely to require good fortune to advance to the next round. It doesn’t matter much to the overall fairness of the contest whether a player advances thanks to a lucky bye or due to timely dice. Either way, wholly undeserved luck will carry the day, most of the time. How best to address bye insults in either game is a separate question, but I would argue that the injustice resulting from an arbitrary bye is, on average, ~5x more significant in a chess tournament than in a backgammon tournament.
