I would think that the fact that XG uses - to indicate a lead in the race (lower pip count) like so: 105 (-12) where your opponent's pip count is 117 (+12) is a strong reason to standardize in that direction. I don't know whether it's just using XG a lot, but I just immediately see that - sign as a good thing.

But having said that, in speaking about a position, you would say I'm "Up 12 in the race" -- I've never heard anyone say it the other way. So:

LEADING: "Up" / -

TRAILING: "Down" / +
