Thanks for your input Timothy (and sorry for the click-bait title, but I think this would be a very valuable feature for future generations of backgammon AI)

I know you are very knowledgeable in this area, so if you had to roughly define the foundations of an algorithm for this in plain English/steps, what approaches might you suggest?
