TC >> instead of trying to come up with a verbal definition of "difficulty," a more promising idea would be to collect as many game transcripts as possible, isolate the blunders that humans make, and have the computer figure out for itself what constitutes a decision that is difficult for humans (i.e., a decision that humans tend to get wrong).
I don't think it's necessarily a case of 'instead of'. I think 'as well as' would be more beneficial?
I should clarify, using AI was already on the roadmap of steps in my head.
By refining some kind of basic list in advance of what types of position we expect the bot to present to us after its training, we can of course more easily verify that it is fitting the purpose it is designed for. Also this list would allow us to more easily verify any potential omissions in the positions it is presenting to us. (Noting here that categorisation and grouping will probably be very important so that I don't forget.)
The AI implementation training would be Step 2 or 3-ish, outside of defining the scope, acceptance criteria and project planning.
This would a far from trivial project, and I will admit its blue sky thinking. But I do believe, with all backgammon brain-boxes in here, its creation is within the realms of possibility. And if implemented correctly to it's conclusion, it could also be the best backgammon training tool on the planet.
It's either that, or wait a decade or few until Consumers can ask an AI to just build this more advanced BG AI on its own!
I would be very interested to know if you are able to kindly add quality to the starred points above.
