Breaking the midpoint

In Response To: Breaking the midpoint (Ignatius)

I think discussing the midpoint could easily be a chapter in a book and maybe an entire book. Probably not easily generalized on when to break.

The first position does look more difficult since your play, on the surface, looks pretty reasonable. I think the big argument for 13/10(2 or 3) there is the fact that with the 11-point already made, the 10-point becomes a very good blocking point of White's anchor. White is not in a hurry to run just one of those so the midpoint isn't a great deterrent. But with several rolls to get 5-5, 13/10(2) is an excellent obstacle to that option.

The second position appears to be a lot about timing. Giving up one of your blocking points doesn't seem to create nearly as much timing as 13/8, 13/11. Sure, you wouldn't mind keeping the mid- to make it harder for White to give up his, but your position has bigger issues than that. Better to concentrate your focus on White's back two, with the bonus of a flyshot hit from your anchor when White leaves a blot on his midpoint.
